How to Read a Supplement Label Like a Formulator

Proprietary blends, % Daily Value, and nutrient forms — a practical decoder for the back of the bottle.

The front of a supplement bottle is marketing. The back is chemistry. Learning to read the Supplement Facts panel is the single highest-leverage skill for anyone buying wellness products.

Start with nutrient forms. Magnesium oxide and magnesium bisglycinate are both 'magnesium,' but absorption differs dramatically. The same goes for folic acid versus L-5-MTHF, and cyanocobalamin versus methylcobalamin.

Next, watch for proprietary blends. When a label lists a total blend weight without per-ingredient amounts, you cannot verify whether the clinically studied dose is present. RY21 publishes every ingredient amount individually — no exceptions.
